French Landscapes: Visiting the "Moulin de Cougnaguet", a fortified mill in the Lot, close to Rocamadour
We have a great souvenir from a fortified mill situated two kilometers away from Rocamadour, in the Lot department, in southwest France. It was during the summer and we had decided to visit Rocamadour for the first time with very good friends. It was a very hot day of August and we went there with two babies. We did enjoy Rocamadour, but it was too hot to spend too much time in the clifftop village, so, avoiding so many tourists and very touristic places, we decided to look for a quite place to take a breath with kids in the way back home. It was then when, two kilometers away from Rocamadour, we discovered a traffic sign signaling the “Moulin de Cougnaguet”, a fortified mill.
Actually, the mill is listed in France as an historic monument. Being a private place nowadays, the mill is showed to visitors by Hubert and Raymonde Faure, a couple explaining to visitors how tons of flour used to be milled per day in the past. It is a very interesting thing also for children, as Hubert Faure explains well how the mill functioned and he is a very passionated man and guide.
We actually passed by coincidence with our friends and actually the spot became the highlight of the day, even if Rocamadour was impressive. The main reason was that, after the visit of the mill, Hubert and Raymonde let us to stay in the garden for a while to spend most of the afternoon with the kids. The mill is located in a great natural environment surrounded by the son of water.
If you are expecting to spend some days in the Lot department one day or you go visiting Rocamadour, do not hesitate to pass and visit this mill, it is a great occasion to have a breath in its splendid environment. Thank you very much for your generosity, Monsieur et Madame Faure, by the way!
